The Gender Equality Observatory of the Catalan Institute for Women has recently presented the dossier 'Women in ICT' for the year 2025. Among the main conclusions raised, the dossier shows that parity has been practically achieved in terms of physical access to technology and the Internet, but there is still a long way to go in terms of training and employment. In this sense, the dossier 'Women in ICT' concludes that the underrepresentation of women in technological studies at universities and in professional training directly affects the presence of women in the labor market. Specifically, the main data in the dossier shows that in 2025, 72.6% of people employed in the ICT sector were men and 27.4% were women. Along these lines, it is worth noting that, in the 2023-2024 academic year, university degrees in engineering and architecture were 71.6% for men and 28.4% for women. Similarly, it is worth noting that, in the 2024-2025 academic year, women enrolled in professional training by subject were 29.5% in health, 3.1% in computing and communications, 1.9% in image and sound and 0.5% in electricity and electronics.
Likewise, the dossier 'Women in ICT' reflects on the wage gap in the ICT sector, which stands at 10%, half of that registered in the economy as a whole, which is 19.5%. The statistical dossier also analyses the uses of technology. Along these lines, the dossier shows that mobile phones are practically universally used, with 99.3% of men and 99.2% of women using them, and Internet access exceeds 97% in both cases. However, the purposes of Internet access differ. Women consult more frequently activities related to health, information search and medical appointments, while men read the news and participate in digital spaces to give their opinions. Finally, according to the 2024 time use survey, prepared by Idescat, men spend about 3 hours 54 minutes 24 seconds a day on the Internet and women spend about 3 hours 11 minutes 54 seconds a day.
